Creating An Ahhhmazing Sleep Experience Part 1

Innsider Secret – Your Mattress Pad Matters

It’s that time of year when I am bogged down with trying to enter a years worth of Quickbooks data to get ready for tax time.  It happens every year!  My intentions are always to take the time at the beginning of the month to put everything into QB from the previous month but it never happens because….. LIFE happens!  So, here I am at the end of the year scrambling again.

“A mattress pad is one of those things that our guests never see and probably don’t think about when they come here but it’s extremely important part of their whole sleep experience during their stay.”

The other night, after spending several hours in Quickbooks, I got in my PJ’s and settled down on the couch to watch a few minutes of TV as I unwound before going to bed. It was right around mid-night. I was flipping through the channels and saw that HSN was getting ready to reveal their “Today’s Special Value” so, out of curiosity (uh oh) I paused to see what it was and boy am I glad I did! They have a line of exclusive bedding called the Concierge Collection and they were offering these amazing, super thick, zip-off-top mattress pads, any size, for just under $65! I was so excited! I ran back to the computer and spent the next 20 minutes or so placing my order, 2 pads for each of the guest room beds and 1 for both beds in our quarters on 3rd floor. You are probably thinking, “Really Cheryl? it’s a mattress pad! Whoopty-doo!” right?  But these were not just mattress pads!

Your mattress pad is a big deal…

I can’t tell you how many mattress pads we have purchased in the 8 years that we have owned 10 Fitch.  A Lot! A mattress pad is one of those things that our guests never see and probably don’t think about when they come here but it’s extremely important part of their whole sleep experience during their stay.  It has to be fresh and clean for every guest and it needs to be super plush and cloud-like and must also protect our expensive, luxurious mattresses.  But even expensive pads have been a disappointment to me because they have failed to hold up to even routine wear and wear.  Many of them literally have fallen apart after just a few washing’s.  Or they stay together but the filling migrates bunches up making the pad lumpy, bumpy and very uncomfortable.  Or they just did not protect our mattresses from spills and stains they way they should have.  So when I saw THESE pads on HSN I was seriously excited.  The 4 inch super fluffy top is guaranteed not to shift or bunch up or fall apart in the washer and dryer.  It’s made up of 2 layers, picture 2 slices of bread – the bottom slice (bottom 2 inches of the top) is attached to a cover that can accommodate mattresses up to 20″ thick.

Now here’s the cool part.  The top slice (top 2 inches) unzips from the bottom slice so you don’t have to remove the whole pad from the bed to wash it.  You just unzip the top and throw that part in the washer! OMGoodness!  Ingenious I tell you! Listen, if it still doesn’t sound exciting to you then maybe you should watch the demo that I watched.  Here’s the recorded live demo.  They are no longer at the Special Value price but as of today, January 22, 2016, they are selling for $69.95

UPDATE: 6.14.16 – Here is a direct link to purchase these mattress pads.  Unfortunately, they are now $89 but they are still worth it!

I am not affiliated with HSN or their Concierge Collection in any way and am not receiving any compensation for sharing this information with you, I just think that in theory, it’s the best mattress pad I’ve ever seen and if it lives up to the demo then I am going to be one happy innkeeper.  They are on their way and I will let you know in a future blog post how we like them once they are on the beds.

“Did you know that one of the biggest triggers for night time allergies and asthma is dust mites?”

So now that I have gone on and on about my purchase I’ll tell you why I decided to share this with you.  It’s because I believe that a good quality,  thick, fluffy mattress pad is one of several key elements to having an ahhhmazing sleep experience.  That’s exactly what we want every single guest to have when they come and stay here at 10 Fitch and in fact, we hear from our guests frequently that they did indeed have their best nights sleep ever, or in a very long time, while they were here. There are many things that we have implemented over the years to help provide that for our guests and I was thinking that I could share this knowledge with you so you can have a better nights sleep at home.

But why is a mattress pad so important you ask?  Besides adding a layer of cushiony softness mattress pads.

  1. Protect your mattress warranty
  2. Keep your mattress clean & dry (moisture in a mattress is not a good thing, not good at all.)
  3. Prolongs the life and comfort of your mattress
  4. Help keep night time allergies in check

Did you know that one of the biggest triggers for night time allergies and asthma is dust mites?  * WARNING * I’m about to totally creep you out.  Ready? These tiny, microscopic bugs live in your mattress where they feed off skin cells that are shed every night. I know!  Gross right? So because you can’t wash your mattress, you need a barrier between you and where these critters live that can be removed and easily washed.  In my book this is the numbero uno reason your mattress pad matters.

In the January 2016 newsletter I listed for our subscribers everything that makes up our “comfort cloud” beds here at the inn and give suggestions so that they can re-create the same sleep experience at home.  If you are not already subscribed to the newsletter you might want to sign up for it.  There’s a place to do that right on the right hand side of the blog.
