We are in the process of having the website totally revamped and to prepare for that I was doing research on area restaurants to include in our dining section on the new website. There are a lot of great places to eat in the Finger Lakes region, definitely no shortage of excellent restaurants but I was really surprised when I stumbled on some very favorable reviews for The 1820’s House restaurant on the east side of Skaneateles Lake because I didn’t even know it existed!
Reading the reviews of those who had had the pleasure of enjoying owner/chef Richard Schreiner’s culinary creations one thing became very clear very quickly, we needed to visit this establishment for ourselves and investigate for our guests!
It does take about half an hour to drive from 10 Fitch in Auburn to The 1820’s House but the drive is lovely and the evening we went the weather was perfect. Our reservation was for 6 O’clock one night mid-week. When we pulled into the drive I must admit that I was a little worried because the restaurant really does not look like much at all. An old farm house with zero curb appeal, plain and unassuming there was nothing that even hinted at the fine meal that we were about to enjoy.
And enjoy we did! Now, you could not call the decor fancy but the view of the lake and the sunset was nothing short of spectacular. We did not dine outside because Rodney doesn’t like to eat outdoors but, it was still a feast for our eyes as well as our palettes none-the-less.
We started out with appetizers. Rodney & mom ordered the pastry stuffed with heirloom tomatoes and cheese which mom thought was very good but Rodney was expecting more of a pizza tasting thing so he was not thrilled with his. I had the seared scallops. Excellent! For our main courses mom ordered the chicken with broccoli & mushrooms and asked if she could have it without the mushrooms and they were very happy to accommodate her. Rodney had the steak special with bacon wrapped shrimp & potatoes agrautin. He was very pleased with his entree. I had the veal and lobster picatta which was amazing! All of the food was prepared with the freshest ingredients and our waitress was attentive and pleasant. We will be returning to The 1820’s House and will definitely be recommending it to our guests.
