Coming to the Finger Lakes? Chris Zwierzynski, from Tripbase.com shares some expert advice on the Finger Lakes and its wine industry.
If you’re a fan of wine and are trying to come up with some good vacation ideas, then there’s certainly no better place to visit than the Finger Lakes region of New York. The area itself just so happens to be the single largest wine-producing region in the whole of New York, which is certainly no mean feat as you’ll hopefully agree!
There are – roughly – over 100 vineyard and wineries centered around the lakes (with the majority being based around Cayuga, Hemlock, Keuka, Canandaigua, Seneca and Conesus), which – when you think about it – means there’s a whole load of wine being made out there! The reason that such a fertile industry is able to flourish is quite obviously thanks to the majesty and convenience of the adjacent lakes, as when a vineyard or winery is situated nearby, it benefits from what is known as a “lake effect”, which is essentially when the precipitation from a nearby lake condenses overhead in the form of rain and as we all know, if you’re trying to grow something, then you most definitely want to have your fair share of rain.
The resulting “lake effect” is what provides wine-makers with lush vineyard after lush vineyard, lending them the ability to produce grapes and wine of fantastic quality and abundance. Also, because of this, the grapes are protected from potentially crop-damaging frosts that typically occur around the times when the grapes are starting to shoot and just before harvest (two vitally important stages in the wine-producing process).
The Finger Lakes wineries produce a wide variety of well-known (and well-enjoyed) types of grape, including such favorites as Pinot Noir, Riesling, Chardonnay and Cabernet Franc. Another interesting point of note is that wine is always in demand, so the Finger Lakes wine industry is in a continual state of growth, contributing vastly to the economy (and merriment) of the region. As well as this, the wineries also attract an increasingly large number of visitors and tourists, who in turn contribute to the economy via tourism.
So don’t delay, make sure you get in a visit to the Finger Lakes wineries and become a part of an experience enjoyed by so many others. While you’re there, you should take some time out to visit 10 Fitch for a romantic getaway and to crack open a bottle of the region’s famous wine!
